Introduction and Discussion

This version of SIMS is specifically designed for the Quick Service Restaurant industry and is applied here for the "Wooden Shoe Hot Dog" chain.  The details below, while fictitious, represents the typical issues of a growing QSR chain.

Wooden Shoe Hot Dogs

In 1955, "Hot Dog" deKuyper left the Netherlands with his family and settled in Pella, Iowa to build a new and better life.  "Hot Dog" was a butcher in the Netherlands and had discovered a secret hot dog formula.  For many years he operated one store and it gave he and his family a good living as a family company.  In 1980, Hot Dog's son Junior joined the firm after graduating from the Harvard Business School.  In 1983, Junior began franchising his family business and it has been growing ever since.  In July, 2004, "Hot Dog" and Junior attended the 1,000th grand opening of a "Wooden Shoe Hot Dog" store.

As the Company continued to grow, there were two significant issues that they wanted to address.

  1. Better Manage the Supply Chain -- As a franchisor, the company has no transactional involvement in the franchisee's business.  They do not have POS data and they do not have supply chain data.  The QSR SIMS solution implements daily data feeds from every distribution center to every store.  Since each distributor has different data and nomenclature, QSR SIMS translates all the data into common SAS databases that can be accessed in over 50 "Analyzers" that are online.
  2. Provide More Franchisee Support --  As the Company has grown it has been more and more difficult to provide as much support and assistance as was possible as a smaller firm.  The QSR SIMS solution includes a website, accessible by franchisees with a "Dash Board" of Key Performance Indicators.  This franchisee support tool provides drill down capability as well as benchmarking a store versus all other stores.  Best practices in key areas are identified. Production versions of QSR SIMS require user name and password and have the same security features as banks -- the demonstration below does not.
